This cassette tape is from a time where Richard and Gilda Phay were living on Foster Street in Hamilton, Victoria, Australia in 1975 near the hospital where I (Ryan Phay) was born. Gilda Phay’s Aunt, her mom’s older sister, Auntie Ruth Unverzagt, came down to visit from Kumbia/Kingaroo, Queensland, Australia for a visit before she set off on a trek to see more relatives in the area. Sitting around the kitchen table were Auntie Ruth, Richard Phay, Gilda’s husband Dick, a.k.a Richard Phay, Kelly, their daughter, and their toddler Ryan (me, I’m the favourite one–or at least the one I’m sharing all these memories for you). They talk about daily events and funny things that had happened in their lives. Gilda had recently had surgery and wasn’t up for much, but Dick had been on a wild Wool Shed Dance on the weekend. They were recording this cassette tape and sending it from Australia to the United States, which would have been normal at the time, to let family there know how they were and what they were up to.
